Weekend styling lessons to learn from Cannes

You'll be pleased to hear that Cannes' dazzling red carpet gowns- which are beautiful but hardly ever relatable for most of us- are not the only looks gracing the Croisette. This year, in particular, has seen a relaxed mood envelope the festival - think ripped Chanel and bare feet at premieres!- which means that there's a wealth of style inspiration to take from the stars. So whether you're off to a fabulous party or just mooching about town this weekend, there's plenty to learn from what the likes of Naomi Watts and Kirsten Dunst have been wearing out and about...

Nod to the sports luxe trend without stepping near tracksuit territory

There’s nothing sporty about Victoria Beckham’s Cannes look, until you notice the thin white piping on her trouser legs. Subtle racing stripes on trousers are a clever way to acknowledge the athletic trend, without having to don a hoodie or take your gym leggings into the public sphere (yes, these are both part of the sportswear as daywear look).

Invest in a monochrome pair, à la Beckham, and dress down with a logo crew-neck jumper and white trainers for the weekend. Come Monday, the same trews will look chic with a crisp white shirt and courts, as demonstrated by Beckham herself. A note on proportions: opt for wide-legged styles. This look is all about fluid tailoring, not jeggings.

Enjoy a white out

All-white looks have been a common occurrence on the Croisette so far. Pale separates can be difficult to co-ordinate, so invest in one trophy item that will tick off the trend with minimum hassle. Kendall Jenner’s ivory Emilia Wickstead jumpsuit nips in flatteringly at the waist and shows off her tan to perfection.

Look for jumpsuits with a simple flourish - check out Kendall’s shoulder bow - to add a point of interest amongst the pale. Team with minimal tan or raffia accessories with accents of white. Remember your jumpsuit should be the star of the show. This is the ideal look if you're off out to dinner or sunday lunch.

Slip into the Nineties throwback trend

If you previously filed the slip dress in the Nineties throwback camp, let Naomi Watts shed some light on the look. Watts, 47, took to the Money Monster premiere in a shimmering Michael Kors Collection slip and literally danced for the cameras. No, really, she did.

Unwittingly, she convinced us that slip dresses aren’t just for lithe models, but for any body-confident woman who wants to enjoy one of the simplest trends of the season. All you need with a slip is an air of confidence, simple sandals (heeled or flat depending on personal preference/occasion) and very little else. If you’re worried about washing out your waistline, look for a style with a relaxed tie feature. The slip has weekend spirit written all over it.

Keep it chic and simple in a shirt dress

We have long praised the humble shirt dress for its versatility, and Kirsten Dunst’s lemon Dior dress is another prime example of its effortless ease. Worn with abstract Dior heels and a gold belt, Dunst’s shirt dress looks evening-appropriate, but would make for chic day wear when worn with plimsolls, sans belt.

Invest in a handful of plain shirt dresses and use the same accessories to pep them up, like Dunst. We like delicate metallic accents against pale blue fabrics, which also happen to sing against a tan. You'll soon wonder how you ever survived without a shirt dress before.
